COMMANDER'S COMMENTS-

April proved to be an eventful month for our Post. Thanks to our Post Riders, led by Ted Sikorski, our front fa
çade now sports a pack howitzer donated by the Sumter Guards through the intersession of Mike Lucier. The Riders trans
ported the cannon and had it placed in the front rock garden.  The Riders also secured a forty-foot flagpole, which will
replace our current pole at the front of our property facing Folly Road. We are most grateful to the Riders, the Sumter
Guards, and all of the personnel who assisted in this endeavor.
Sadly, April also brought the retirement of a Post stalwart, Joe Yantorn, who announced that he was stepping
down as Commander of the Honor Guard after twenty-eight years of service to our Post. We are extremely grateful for the
service Joe provided our Post because he commanded one of the few Honor Guards in the low country. His leadership,
patriotism, and willingness to respond to most requests on behalf of veterans will be sorely missed. Unbeknownst to
many, he was a quiet strength behind many initiatives regarding ceremonies commemorating significant milestones at our
Post. The 911 Memorial is a case in point, for it was Joe who suggested and helped organize the event on its 20th Anniver
sary.  He was also a moving force behind the Four Chaplains Rememberance, Post Everlasting, and Flag Retirement ser
vices conducted each year. His unflagging devotion to duty has defined him and he deserves all accolades accorded him.
Thank you, Joe Yantorn.
May will feature our Post’s Executive Board election which will be held on May 8th in the front hall at 19:00.
Nominations are available in the canteen and all Legionnaires who are in good standing may run for office. To vote, you
must have and present your Legion Card for 2025 as of May 1st, be present (no proxy votes), and enter before the doors
close at 17:00.  Please come and vote and know that active participation makes our Post stronger. We need you!
Tuesday, May 6th will be Trivia Night, and the contest begins at 18:00 and generally lasts about ninety minutes.
Light refreshments are served, and teams can be composed of one to five members. It is fun, free, and a terrific way to
meet new people and learn positively trivial information. (I have to be honest!)
The Saturday before Mother’s Day, May 10th, the Auxiliary will be serving fried pork chops as a reminder of
meals from our past. Come by and reminisce.
Our 2nd Vice-Commander, Charlie Bowers, has constructed a slate of entertainment throughout the Saturdays of
the month that is sure to entertain and satisfy the musical tastes of most people.  See our calendar for the particulars.
A reminder: Memorial Day is May 26th this year and the ceremony begins at 11:00 with a collation in the can
teen at the end of the event. It is a solemn event, and I hope your personal schedule allows you to attend.
Remember those deployed and Thank You for being part of our extended Legionnaire family.

Steve Driscoll, Commander
